Solar Carport in Thailand: A Smart Way to Use Space for Solar

A solar carport can do two jobs at the same time: create useful shaded space and generate solar electricity.

For properties in Thailand, this can be especially practical. Homes, villas, resorts and small businesses often have open parking areas or unused spaces that receive strong sunlight throughout the day. Instead of leaving that space empty, a solar carport can turn it into part of the energy system.

For some properties, it can also solve another common problem: not having enough suitable roof space for the amount of solar required.

Why Consider a Solar Carport?

A solar carport is a raised structure with solar panels installed above it.

Unlike normal rooftop solar, the panels are supported by a separate structure. The space underneath can remain useful for parking, walking areas or other property functions.

In Thailand, the shading itself can also be valuable. Cars and outdoor areas are exposed to strong heat during the day, so creating shade while generating electricity makes the same space work harder.

A solar carport in Thailand can therefore make sense when a property has:

A Good Match for Daytime Electricity Loads

Solar generation is strongest during daylight hours, so one of the best uses of solar is supplying equipment that operates during the day.

This can include:

  • water pumps
  • air-conditioning
  • pool equipment
  • common-area electrical loads
  • office equipment
  • resort facilities

Using solar directly during the daytime can reduce the amount of electricity the property needs to purchase from the grid.

This was one of the key reasons a solar carport worked well for one of our projects in Koh Lanta.

The property had eight water pumps operating mainly during the day. That created a natural match between solar production and the customer's electricity demand.

Real Solar Carport Project in Koh Lanta

Thai Solar Power completed this solar carport project in Koh Lanta in 2021 for a residential resort-style property.

The main objective was to support the electricity consumption of the property's eight water pumps while also making better use of the available space.

The system included:

  • 62 × 440 W monocrystalline solar panels
  • 27.28 kWp total PV capacity
  • 2 × Huawei SUN2000-5KTL-L1 5 kW single-phase inverters
  • 1 × Huawei SUN2000-10KTL-M0 10 kW three-phase inverter
  • single-phase and three-phase Huawei power sensors for system measurement

The equipment was only one part of the project.

The more important point was how the system was designed around the site's actual electrical requirements. The property had both single-phase and three-phase loads, so the inverter configuration had to match the way the electrical system was already operating.

The daytime pump demand also meant that much of the solar energy could be used directly when it was being generated.

Using Existing Space More Efficiently

One of the biggest advantages of carport solar in Thailand is that the solar system does not necessarily compete with the existing roof.

Instead, parking areas or other open spaces can become productive energy-generating areas.

For properties such as resorts, villas and larger homes, this can be particularly useful because roof areas may already be occupied, shaded, difficult to access or simply too small for the required PV capacity.

A solar carport can also create a more comfortable shaded area underneath.

This is why we look at solar design as more than just placing panels wherever there is space. The goal is to understand how the property is used and find a layout that makes practical sense.

Sometimes rooftop solar is the best answer. In other cases, a solar canopy or solar parking structure may allow the customer to generate more electricity while keeping the property functional.

What Goes Into Designing a Solar Carport?

A solar carport requires more planning than simply choosing solar panels.

The design needs to consider:

  • available area
  • solar orientation
  • structural requirements
  • wind exposure
  • electrical loads
  • inverter sizing
  • single-phase or three-phase supply
  • cable routes
  • drainage and access
  • how the space underneath will continue to be used

For a resort or larger property, the electrical side is just as important as the structure.

In the Koh Lanta project, the system needed to support multiple water pumps and work with both single-phase and three-phase electrical equipment. That is why understanding the site's real loads came before selecting the final inverter arrangement.

A well-designed solar carport for water pumps in Thailand should be based on the actual pump operating schedule and electrical demand, not only the available roof or parking area.

Is a Solar Carport Right for Your Property?

A solar carport can be a very good solution, but it is not necessary for every project.

If a property already has a large, suitable roof with good solar exposure, conventional rooftop solar may be simpler and more economical.

A solar carport becomes more interesting when:

  • roof space is limited
  • the property already needs shade
  • open parking or outdoor areas are available
  • the customer has strong daytime electricity demand
  • the property needs more solar capacity than the roof can support

For resorts, villas and commercial properties, it can also be a way to combine practical site improvements with renewable energy generation.
